Back to the Crags

I went back to Idaho last week for on another week long backpacking trip around the Bighorn Crags. I opted not to take my camera this time... every ounce really does count when you're carrying more than 50 pounds. This year's group included my dad, his friend Don, plus Don's friends Mike and Barbara. They also brought their ten-and-a-half year old golden retriever, Draba, who I must commend for being one of the most well behaved dogs I've ever met.
This year my dad decided to hire the Bighorn Outfitters to carry our packs into Reflection Lake on the backs of their mules. Met we had to go 12 miles the first day but that was a cakewalk with only a daypack to weigh me down. We made camp at Reflection Lake for three nights, making day trips to the nearby Buck, Doe, Fawn, Twin Cove, Echo, and Turquoise Lakes. Overall the fishing wasn't as good for me this year—I only caught two fish that were big enough to keep but I estimate I caught-and-released more than 40 over the course of the week. Don and Mike were able to land some impressive trout in the 18 inch range using their fly rods. They caught a couple of fish that size in Buck Lake that had deformed and/or stunted tails, likely the result of Whirling disease. I could only fish for 2-3 hours each day before getting burned out; the others were generally at it twice that long.

On the fourth day we packed up and backtracked two miles to camp near Skyhigh Lake which we fished the next morning. On the fifth day we hiked back over the ridge to Welcome Lake and the sixth day we spent at Cathedral Lake. We made camp on the ridge overlooking Cathedral Lake this year which cut in half the steep ascent we had to do the final morning.

The weather wasn't as nice as last year but it wasn't as bad either... it was pleasant. No subfreezing nights or scorching hot days. I'm not sure about going back again. That drive is a killer. I ended up spending close to 20 hours in the car last weekend, about 4 hours of which was due to the 20 mile back up on I-90 caused by an RV fire :(
