Urban Spice Goo

I think I now the own the last of this year's Greatest Hits compilations. I picked up the Goo Goo Dolls and Spice Girls last week. I bought Keith Urban's on Tuesday.

The Goo Goo Dolls collection is titled Greatest Hits Volume 1: The Singles. It is a complete retrospective of their hits but has one unfortunate flaw. They recorded a new version of Name for this disc that is really sub par. Apparently they were not able to license the song from their original label, Metal Blade Records, with whom they released the track on the "A Boy Named Goo" album. For some reason this disc is selling below the typical price so I guess that makes up for the imperfection. My favorite songs are Slide and Broadway.

I actually had to go to Victoria's Secret to buy the Spice Girls Greatest Hits. Could very well be the first and last thing I ever purchase from that store. Anyway, this CD has all of their hits as well as some other songs. Their new song titled Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) isn't great but it's not bad either. I like that you can still detect the British accent in the voices of the five Spice Girls but I'm really more impressed by the songwriting—Pop Music perfection. My favorite song on this disc is Say You'll Be There.

I wasn't originally going to buy Keith Urban's Greatest Hits but then I realized there were half a dozen songs on it that I knew and liked. One is even a song that was sung at my friend Courtney's wedding—Making Memories of Us. Mr. Nicole Kidman isn't my favorite country music artist but this is the type of country music I like, weaving sentimental stories with the lyrics rather than playing off stupid puns or metaphors. Somebody Like You is my favorite track on this collection.

By the way, if you're interested in how it is that I almost never miss a greatest hits release, the secret is one awesome website: Pause & Play. Greatest hits are listed in the light blue "Old Stuff" section (not everything listed is a greatest hits collection, many are simply reissues).

I think I might pay money to watch you go into a Victoria's Secret ; )

Just kidding. Glad you were able to get in and out with your dignity intact!
